Thought for the Solstice. It occured to me today that there has never been a better time in history to be in the business of spreading ideas. Whether you are looking for a freelance gig, evangelizing a religion or an operating system, building a business or fundraising for a non-profit, the tools and the environment… Continue reading Thought for the Solstice

It's good to be loved
It's good to be loved. I recently released a PHP 4.3.10 Installer for Windows. I got some fan mail. It's good to be loved. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. [PHP Everywhere – By John Lim]
Impressive Blackstone Powered Flash Forms
Impressive Blackstone Powered Flash Forms. I've been demonstrating basic use of Blackstone Flash Forms for a while now; little things like pop-up calendars, simple tab dialogs and accordion controls, grids and trees in forms, input masking, basic events, and more. All very cool looking, or so I thought. But several developers have commented that they'd… Continue reading Impressive Blackstone Powered Flash Forms
Management by objects
Management by objects. Last month I wrote about MSH (“Monad”), Microsoft's new command shell, and demonstrated the software on my blog. The column-plus-demo drew favorable reactions not only from the Windows crowd, but also from Unix/Linux folk who saw the MSH object pipeline as a genuine innovation. They're right. … As Windows steadily evolves into… Continue reading Management by objects
Business Cards from GotPrint
Business Cards from GotPrint. I got my business cards from GotPrint today. All in all, I'm pleased with almost every aspect of doing business with them. The card stock is quick thick and strong, the glossy side is very glossy, the cutting seems uniform and consistent and the print is clean and crisp on the… Continue reading Business Cards from GotPrint
CSM
CSM. Kurdish Intelligence officers suggest thousands of groups in Iraq's bazaar and not hundreds. The insurgent groups compose themselves in very small cells of two or three people. “Each cell has an “emir,” – a word that usually means a cleric, but in this case denotes a leader. The emir is the one with the… Continue reading CSM
Lind
Lind analyzes Fallujah. Of course, Fallujah itself was largely destroyed in the American assault. The American military did the only thing a Second Generation military can do: it put firepower on targets. 2GW armed services are one-trick ponies: they only have one act, and they perform it regardless of whether it fits the circumstances or… Continue reading Lind
Economy update. This season's shopping season, after a good start is tanking: Nationwide,
total sales fell 3.3 percent for Saturday and Sunday compared with the
same two days a year earlier, according to ShopperTrak, which tracks
sales at 30,000 retail outlets nationwide. Here's a personal observation.
I went to get my hair cut at a local upscale salon today. My
hairdresser (of the last 5 years) pointed out all the empty chairs in
the salon. This was really unusual, since the place typically has lines
out the door in the days before the holidays. “What happened” I asked.
“The election” she answered. After the election, there was a wave of
cancellations. [John Robb's Weblog

PPTP is Dead, Too
PPTP is Dead, Too. Microsoft's VPN protocol PPTP is now dead, too: It's been known for a while that MSCHAPv2 authentication was a bad idea, and PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) relies by default on this method of credentials. George Ou explains how Joshua Wright, developer of the Cisco LEAP breaking software Asleap has simply added… Continue reading PPTP is Dead, Too
