Microsoft, despite the mountains of logic that dictate that they should, has never made it easy to migrate to new hardware

John Robb: “Microsoft, despite the mountains of logic that dictate that they should, has never made it easy to migrate to new hardware.” True. And, it's something that all Microsoft employees should care about. Particularly those of us who need to reformat our machines every few days to test new things. What's my solution? I… Continue reading Microsoft, despite the mountains of logic that dictate that they should, has never made it easy to migrate to new hardware

The Weblog Network

MindPlex: The Weblog Network.  I should have a project/business plan (although for all intents and purposes this will be operated to maximize revenue for the authors) for this by the end of the week.  This will let me prioritize the steps necessary to bring this project to fruition.  I am working already on some of… Continue reading The Weblog Network

Dan Bricklin

Dan Bricklin opines on the importance of domain ownership when publishing a weblog (or anything for that matter).  My weblog is used as an example.   [John Robb's Weblog]

MyLifeBits

I just got a presentation (thanks Myron), too large for me to post, on MyLifeBits by Gordon Bell of Microsoft.  This project promises to provide a PC-based organizational system for all the digital data a person accumulates during a lifetime. Frankly, the presentation looks more than a little convoluted.  Further, the presentation claims the project is aimed at Longhorn.  I don't think it will make… Continue reading MyLifeBits

DEVONthink

DEVONthink (thanks Thomas).  This is pretty interesting.  A freeform database with a browser interface that organizes your local data by similarity.  Lots of nice plug-ins including 3rd party efforts. OSX only unfortunately.  It does handle OPML though. [John Robb's Weblog]

instructions

Simple instructions on replacing your expensive and relatively useless KM system with a K-Log system that actually works…. [John Robb's Weblog]

SFExaminer

SFExaminer.  Microsoft will spend $6.8 b a year on R&D in 2004 (they have routinely spent ~$5 b a year prior to this).  Perhaps I am missing something, but I haven't seen anything new in Windows over the last 4 years that justifies this research budget.  If a tenth of this budget was spent acquiring innovative ISVs… Continue reading SFExaminer

features

What features does a K-Log network need?  I am working on a major upgrade to this feature set with my work on Mindplex and other projects. [John Robb's Weblog]

Gates: Longhorn is 'a bit scary'

InfoWorld: Gates: Longhorn is 'a bit scary'. Longhorn, the next version of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows desktop operating system, will be so different from its predecessors that users may not like it right away, Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates said Thursday. Upgrades gone bad

Upgrades gone bad. I’m an Expensable user — it’s an old Quicken product (now owned by the ominous-sounding “One Mind Connect”) that manages expense reports. About two months ago, it produced an expense report that printed out all expenses as “miscellaneous” even though all were properly categorized in the program. It took days to figure… Continue reading Upgrades gone bad
