Token Concorde
British Airways turned down Sir Richard Branson's latest offer to buy the retiring Concorde fleet for one million pounds sterling per plane. His previous offer was one pound per plane, so there's been definite movement in the negotiation. Branson wants establish a Virgin Atlantic Concorde service that he says he would run as a loss leader if he has to, but he thinks there is profit potential. It's true that there doesn't appear to be a rival service in sight. Meanwhile, British Air says it now plans to keep a token Concorde in flying condition for special occasions (and rock star charter trips?). Air France ended its Concorde service last month and turned over it's aircraft to the Smithsonian, so British Air is the last hope for preserving Concorde as we know it. [cloudtravel]
