Security consultant Bruce Schneier warned about the ubiquity of buffer overflow programming design flaws in his 2000 book, Secrets and Lies (still the best book on computer security I've seen). He gave tips on how programmers could avoid them. However, they continue to proliferate. Yahoo has just now caught up the the issue.
