IWon – U.S. Upholds Ban on Selling Personal Data .
A federal court upheld a ruling that credit bureaus and other data firms no longer will be allowed to sell names, addresses, Social Security numbers and phone numbers from credit records without consumer consent, the Wall Street Journal reported in its online edition on Tuesday.
The rule, which goes into effect July 1, could hurt the booming trade in such data, which are heavily used by marketers, the paper noted.
The Federal Reserve, the “Federal Trade Commission”, and four other regulatory agencies prevailed over Trans Union LLC and other industry giants such as Equifax Inc. (EFX), Acxiom Corp. (ACXM), Reed Elsevier (ELSN) (REED) Plc unit Lexis Nexis and First Data Solutions LLC, which were represented in court by the industry's Individual References Services Group, the paper said.
